FEEL THE CITY

The Clock Tower is an extremely elegant monument that graces the Konak Square in the city center and is beloved as the symbol of Izmir. This charming building with its lace-like stone façade was commissioned by the Grand Vizier Küçük Sait PaÅŸa and constructed by the French architect Raymond Pere to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamit II. The foundation of the tower was laid on September 1st, 1900, and completed a year later. The clock itself was a present from the German Emperor Wilhelm II, given to commemorate both Turkish-German friendship as well as the personal friendship between the two rulers.
